When people introduce themselves, they often list out titles and achievements to gain credibility. I could do the same: nearly ten years in the translation industry, a graduate from the prestigious "Harvard of translation schools," a former guest lecturer at a renowned foreign language university, a certified simultaneous interpreter, translator for prominent figures, first-place winner in interpretation competitions, and recipient of national English competition grand prizes...

 

But beyond these accolades, I’m simply a girl who deeply loves the T&I industry (Translation & Interpretation).

 

I’m a young entrepreneur with a simple yet steadfast goal: to create a healthy ecosystem for the industry, improve the standards and quality of China's language services, and increase the public's understanding, respect, and recognition of the T&I field.

 

If you've followed me on Weibo @同传Livi, you might already know me. Over the past eight years, I've published more than 150 articles on Sina Weibo, covering every aspect of the T&I industry.

 

So, how did Pegasus come to be?

 

The Beginning

The difficulty of getting into top translation schools is well-known, so I won't go into that. What I remember most vividly is the time spent studying in the U.S., practicing simultaneous interpretation with classmates day in and day out, rain or shine, without fail. It was during the pandemic, and being alone in a foreign country was tough, but I persevered through the isolation and pressure, completing a high-stakes conference interpreting project.

 

I only remember that when I was studying in the United States, I practiced simultaneous interpretation with my classmates almost every day, rain or shine. Sometimes I really felt like I couldn't hold on, but I still gritted my teeth and persevered, completing the most valuable conference interpretation project in loneliness and pressure.

 

With the encouragement of my professors and classmates, I came to Shanghai, a bustling international city full of promise. But when I first encountered the domestic translation market, I quickly realized the gap between my ideals and reality.

 

The market was filled with unregulated practices, which made me wonder: perhaps there is a real need for a company that values craftsmanship and adheres to international standards. This thought took root and became the driving force behind the founding of Pegasus.

 

I hope that through our efforts, we can not only provide higher-quality services to clients but also bring positive changes to the industry.

 

The Journey

Once the idea of starting a business came up, we immediately jumped into action.

 

In the early stages of entrepreneurship, we truly built everything from the ground up. From finding an office space, carefully selecting furniture, to even buying office supplies—every detail was handled personally.

 

There were many nights when I came home completely exhausted, falling into bed as soon as I walked through the door. But no matter how tiring it was, I would wake up early the next day, ready to pour myself into building the company. Watching the office slowly come together from scratch, the sense of accomplishment made all the hard work and fatigue seem insignificant. Each late-night hustle and every bit of persistence was a step toward realizing our dream.

Fast forward to 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the world came to a standstill. As lockdowns isolated people, many businesses faced unprecedented challenges, and we were no exception. Suddenly, customers and partners were wondering how to continue to communicate effectively in this new environment.

 

It is during this period when the world is on pause that we realize that the importance of translation services is more prominent than ever. Faced with the limitations of traditional methods, we firmly believe that the market needs more innovative and efficient translation solutions.

 

Therefore, at this critical moment, we re-examined our service model and committed to developing translation solutions that meet the needs of the new era, not only helping customers overcome language barriers, but also winning them more opportunities in the global market.

 

Since then, we have helped countless businesses and individuals achieve accurate and efficient cross-cultural communication. We are not limited to traditional translation services, but also help our customers succeed in a multilingual environment through continuous optimization methods.

 

This experience also made us deeply realize that translation is not only the conversion of language, but also the bridge of culture. The approach we take is in line with the natural communication mode of human beings, emphasizing practical application rather than just pursuing perfection in books. Although we dare not say that we have found all the answers, we have found an effective method that is not only suitable for ourselves, but also for our customers.

The language service industry faces internal and external challenges, but it is still full of hope. Today is the era of artificial intelligence, and many friends ask me: "Jiayi, with AI, do we still need human translators?" I recently shared my views in a group, part of which is as follows:

 

Machines are just products, while human translators provide services. The two are not in the same dimension. As far as interpretation is concerned, machines can only cope with daily communication when traveling abroad, and cannot meet the high standards of professional conferences. Even in English translation, machines are just makeshift, not top-level experience. As for minority languages, machines still have a long way to go.

 

Even if technology advances in the future, machine translation can only be on par with excellent human translators at best. Each has its own advantages, and customers can choose freely. Machines are tireless, but they cannot operate without electricity or the Internet. Moreover, machines cannot hold umbrellas for customers on rainy days, or give foreign friends a hug when they say goodbye at the airport - these are human warmth.

 

It's like choosing between an early childhood education machine and a teacher, or a cooking machine and a chef. The answer is obvious. Ultimately, clients who pursue high-quality and effective communication will still choose translators who are well versed in cross-cultural communication. Language carries culture, customs and traditions. Imagine that a client takes a translator to a negotiation. The machine cannot help build trust, nor can it explain the customs behind many cultures. Especially for Spanish in South America, which has many local usages, machines are far inferior to translators who are proficient in local languages.

 

In terms of written translation, although machines can reduce the burden and improve efficiency, even if the translation accuracy reaches 90%, the client still needs professional translators to find the remaining 10% problems, and these 10% require the translator to invest 100% of energy. Therefore, even with machines, the necessary costs cannot be saved.

 

 

Vision

 

Our mission is to make the domestic translation industry more standardized, to let more people understand the real translation industry, to ensure that translators are rewarded for their work, and to ensure that good customers receive good quality.

 

We need to get rid of the inefficiency and information opacity brought by the traditional way of finding translators. Search engine bidding rankings and suppliers' subcontracting often result in good translators not getting good treatment and good customers not meeting good translators.

 

This is more than just translation services. It’s about how to improve communication and achieve deeper connections in a global context.
